The founder of Ombrelli Maglia, Francesco Maglia, started the company at the age of 14 as an umbrella apprentice in 1850 in an umbrella factory in Montechiari, near Brescia. The Maglia family was originally from Valganna and was a family of coal miners and lumberjacks.
In 1854, at the age of 18, Francesco Maglia became a partner in a small umbrella factory in Verolanuova, and then moved to Pavia, where he set up his own company.
The fifth Generation
In 1876 the company moved to Milan, in Corso Genova 7, where it remained until 2003, when it moved to via Ripamonti 194. The Maglia family has always made straw hats and umbrellas (although their production ended in 1923). Traditionally, a son has always been called Francesco; one of the current owners is the fifth Francisco who runs the family business with his brother Giorgio. Giorgio, in turn, called his eldest son Francesco. The current owner, Francesco Maglia, not only lovingly devotes himself to his work, but also passionately researches and collects prints, postcards and gadgets related to umbrellas. This collection, which he has meticulously built up over the years during his business travels, numbers over three thousand pieces and has also been shown in exhibitions.
ARTISAN WORKSHOP, HANDMADE UMBRELLAS
The company has always maintained the philosophy of craftsmanship, using only brass, wood and iron materials. We do not mass produce, every step of our umbrella production is entirely carried out in Maglia's workshop and each umbrella is custom designed to meet the needs of each customer. Maglia in Milan offers a wide range of umbrellas with different rib sizes (from 52 to 75 cm), with 8 or 10 panels and a variety of handles in natural wood or leather. Maglia's prerogative is to manufacture umbrellas on a single tree in chestnut, ash, rattan, apple, maple, bamboo, Marasca cherry, olive and hazelnut wood. In recent years, due to demand from the Japanese and American markets, the company has resumed production of fine lace and natural fiber parasols with ornate bamboo, horn and silver handles.
“Our European, Japanese and American exports now account for more than 60% of our turnover. Our best customers include the best English stores who, until a few years ago, only bought domestic products”. Maglia offers a wide range of finely crafted umbrellas in different sizes, with classic and modern designs, with wooden or leather details to satisfy all the tastes of its customers, from the most classic to the most demanding and extravagant.
