SHIRIN ABEDINIRAD

Exploring Self, Identity, and Nature through Art

Unleashing the Power of Art through Earthly Installations

Shirin Abedinirad, an Iranian artist born in Tabriz in 1986, has been making waves in the art world with her thought-provoking works. Abedinirad's artistic journey began in 2002 when she delved into painting, and from there, her passion for art only grew stronger.

After completing her academic studies in Graphic Design, Abedinirad pursued Fashion Design at Shariaty Technical College in Tehran. It was during her time there that she developed a keen interest in conceptual art and its intersection with fashion design. This fascination led her to explore performance art, where she tackled important societal issues such as gender, sexuality, and human compassion. Through her performances and public shows, Abedinirad fearlessly addressed these topics, using her art as a medium for social commentary.

In 2012, Abedinirad ventured into the realm of video art, exploring the concept of self and identity through moving images. Both in her performance art projects and videos, Abedinirad took on the roles of performer and designer, creating her own costumes, props, and sets. This multidisciplinary approach allowed her to fully immerse herself in her artistic expression, leaving a profound impact on viewers.

VISUAL EXPRESSION

As her artistic journey progressed, Abedinirad found herself increasingly drawn to nature as a central theme. In 2013, she embarked on creating land art, installation projects, and public art that incorporated imagery inspired by the natural world. Her unique approach to blending nature with art captivated audiences and brought her widespread recognition. In March 2014, Abedinirad's talent was recognized when she was awarded a one-year scholarship with United Colors of Benetton's prestigious Fabrica research center in Italy. During her time at Fabrica, Abedinirad worked in the Editorial Department and even published a book titled "Fashion & Conceptual Art" in collaboration with Nazar Publication. This publication further showcased her innovative ideas and artistic vision to a wider audience.

Abedinirad's artworks have been exhibited in numerous international festivals, biennials, and exhibitions across the globe. Currently based in the United States, she continues to create captivating performance art, installation pieces, and video projects. Her artistry transcends borders and resonates with viewers worldwide, leaving a lasting impression.

Shirin Abedinirad's dedication to exploring self, identity, and nature through art has firmly established her as a rising star in the contemporary art scene. With each new project, she challenges conventions and pushes boundaries, inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of the human experience. As she continues to evolve as an artist, we eagerly anticipate the captivating works that Abedinirad will unveil in the future.

Dilemma

"Dilemma" is an impactful land art project installed in Iran that explores the tension between ascending to the sky and embracing lightness or descending to the ground and confronting darkness. Against the backdrop of the current situation in the country, the artist expresses the feeling of being trapped in a dilemma that necessitates making significant choices. Through this thought-provoking pathway, the artist aspires to guide society towards a path illuminated by light and hope.

Collective Reflection

“You are a volume in a divine book.

A mirror to the power that created the universe

whatever you want, ask it, of yourself,

whatever you’re looking for can only be found

Inside of you.”

Rumi (1207-1273)

REVISION

"Revision" is a visionary installation that consists of mirrored retro television sets arranged in the shape of a Ziggurat. Located on an isthmus at the mouth of the Erskine River, the installation reflects the surrounding nature and the movements of people who visit the site. Abedinirad invites audiences to experience nature in a new way, breaking away from the uncertainties of TV news and embracing the beauty of reality. Through the simple act of reflection, the installation creates a live movie that captures the essence of everyone and everything around it, highlighting the power of art to reveal the soul.

TIDE

Tide is a conceptual art piece influenced by the Persian poet Attar's work, Mantiq al-Tayr. It draws inspiration from the seven steps of mysticism described in the book, symbolizing the journey of self-realization. The installation features a wooden door partially buried in the sand, with a mirror inside reflecting both the sea and the viewers standing before it. Through metaphor and reflection, Tide invites contemplation on the search for truth and personal transformation.

EVOCATION

In the art installation "Evocation," Shirin addresses a significant challenge of living in the desert: the scarcity of water. Displayed in Iran Central Desert in 2013, this land art piece utilizes mirrors to create the illusion of refreshing blue pools amidst the sandy landscape. It is a mesmerizing mirage in the desert, as the mirrored circles, partly concealed by the golden sand, initially appear to be small ponds. It is only upon closer observation that we realize they are actually reflections of the sky across the dunes. By distorting our perception of nature and presenting a deceptive narrative, the artwork questions the connection between the human mind and the essential elements of the natural world.

Mirror of the Heart #2

The door serves as more than just an entrance. It prompts us to pause and reflect on our past actions and behaviors. When we face the door, we see ourselves and the landscape behind us—a reflection of our recent experiences that we may have overlooked. This confronting reality encourages us to contemplate our journey through life and opens the door to the possibility of change. The installation also incorporates audience participation, with the last five photos showcasing visitors' experiences at the Andorra Land Art Biennale, adding a personal touch to the artistic exploration.

Liminal

There have been moments in my life when I have felt immobilized between the two paths, and I don’t know which way to take. Living far from my homeland deeply affected my soul and I feel I am living in a liminal situation which I hope is conveyed in this work.

THE BABEL TOWER

The Tower of Babel story depicts a time when humanity shared a common language and lived together without boundaries. However, their pride and power concerned the Lord, leading to the dispersion of languages and the loss of understanding among people. Babel Tower, an interactive installation, merges the ancient spiritual architecture with modern materials, bridging the gap between past and present. By reflecting the sky and symbolizing the tower's aspiration to reach the heavens, it connects earth and sky. The use of mirrors in the structure enhances its luminosity and represents a glimpse of paradise. Whether placed in a city or natural environment, the installation responds to audience interaction or weather conditions, transforming the world and unifying human, city, and nature. Through movement, it captures the essence of the entire world in one piece, offering a transformative experience and dialogue with the surrounding environment.
